Who is St. Benedict of Nursia?
Part 2: Establishing Monastic Communities
Benedictโs growing reputation for wisdom and piety attracted followers, leading him to establish several monastic communities. The most famous of these was Monte Cassino, founded around 529 AD. There, Benedict wrote his โRule of St. Benedict,โ a guide for monastic life that emphasized balance, order, and community. The Rule focused on the principles of โora et laboraโ (prayer and work), ensuring that the monks led disciplined yet spiritually fulfilling lives.
