HONORS AND AWARDS

GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR THE SELECTION OF THE RECIPIENTS OF THE HIGHEST AWARDS OF THE GRADUATING CLASS

Awards and honor are given to the top graduating pupils in the Grade School Department in recognition of the exemplary performance of their schoolwork. The guidelines for the selection of honor pupils are as follows:

1.      The top graduating pupils are honored and given the awards during the commencement program.

2.      Any member of the graduating classes is eligible to be a candidate for honors if he/she meets the following requirements:

2.1.   He/she must have done the entire schoolwork for Levels 9- 14 in St. Benedict College.

2.2.   He/she must have a grade not lower than S+ in all subject areas in all assessment periods of Levels 9-14 as recorded in the pupil's Form 137 and 138-A.

2.3.   He/she must have completed the curriculum years within the      prescribed length in years. However, consideration for pupils who spent more years of schooling may be given due to unavoidable circumstances such as serious ailment, calamities and peace and order situation as the case may be. Documentary proofs should be presented.

2.4.   He/she must be an active member of one authorized (i.e. approved and sanctioned by the school organization or club in each school year for Levels 9-14.

3.      Any member of the graduatin class is eligible for the St. Anselm Award for Academic Excellence if he/she attains the highest academic average with co-curricular activities for three (3) years in each of the subject areas.  However, for CVE, the Conduct grade is added and should not be lower than VS in any assessment period from L9-14.

4.      The following criteria and corresponding weights shall be used in determining the highest awards:

4.1.   Academic Excellence

Academic excellence shall be based on the general average of the candidate in the three years of schooling. Specific weight for each school year is assigned.

4.2.   Conduct

Conduct shall be based on the observed behavior and attitude of the candidate as evidenced by his/her refinement in speech, action and work and daily relationship with his/ her classmates, peers, teachers and people he /she gets in touch with daily.

4.3.   Performance in Co-Curricular Activities

Performance shall be based on active participation/ leadership of the candidate in at least one authorized pupil organization or club, (literary, musical, sports). Awards in recognition of what the pupil, learned in school for every school year from Levels 9-14 shall also be part of the performance. The rating for co-curricular activities is based on the combined assessment of the advisers of the clubs where he/she was, a member from Levels 9-14 as recorded in separate grading sheets for the co-curricular activities and organization recognized by the school.

The MOST OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE AWARD - PINAKAMUMUKOD NA GAWAD PAGKAKAGANAP - is given to the top fifteen (15) graduating pupils.  These are children who have consistently maintained exemplary achievement in academics, character and co-curricular activities. The awards are as follows:

  1. Gawad San Benito (St. Benedict Trophy)

    St. Benedict (480-547AD) is the founding father of all Benedictines. He wrote the Holy Rule and lived a life in accordance to God's will and a life guided by ORA et LABORA (prayer and work).
    This award is given the most outstanding pupil for overall excellence in academics, character and co-curricular activities.


  2. Gawad San Beda (Plaque)

    St. Bede (673-735 A.D.) lived in Nothumbia and
    Jarrow, England and spent all his life as a Benedictine monk and devoted to scholarship and prayer.
    This award is given to the graduate who ranks second for outstanding achievement in academics, conduct and activities.


  3. Gawad Abbot Chancellor (Plaque)

    This award is given to the graduate who ranks third for outstanding achievement in academics, conduct and activities.


  4. Gawad Rektor (Plaque)

    This award is given to the graduate who ranks fourth for outstanding achievement in academics, conduct and activities.


  5. Gawad Punong-guro (Plaque)

    This award is given to the graduate who ranks fifth for outstanding achievement in academics, conduct and activities.


  6. Karangalang Banggit (Medals)

    This award is given to the graduates who rank from sixth to the fifteenth for outstanding achievement in academics, conduct and activities.


AWARD FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE (Medals) Gawad San Anselmo ng Kagalingan

St. Anselm (1033-1109) is a famous Benedictine scholar and theologian. He wrote many theological treatises and was sought for his learning wisdom. 


This award is given to the graduating pupils who attain the highest average for three (3) years in each of the subject areas and in their co curricular

SPECIAL AWARDS (Medals)

  1. Gawad San Gregorio (St. Gregory Award)
    St. Gregory 1 (604 A.D.) as Bishop of Rome, was the First
    Benedictine Pope who distinguished himself as one of the greatest pastors of the Church. His writings and spiritual leadership brought about a great deepening of the faith in his time.
    This award is given to the graduating student who showed remarkable leadership and rendered outstanding service to the school by way of his/her selfless and devoted pursuit of the ideals and objectives of SBC.


  2. Gawad San Lorenzo Ruiz (St. Lorenzo Ruiz Award)
    St. Lorenzo Ruiz is the first Filipino saint beatified in 1981 and was canonized in 1989 by His Holiness, Pope John Paul 11.
    San Lorenzo chose a martyr's death rather than renounce his faith.
    This award is given to the pupil who receives the highest conduct average in the level.


  3. Gawad Montserrat ng Katapatan sa Paaralan (Montserrat Loyalty Award)
    The Abbey of Our Lady of Montserrat in
    Barcelona, Spain is the founding monastery of Benedictine Life in the Philippines. The first Benedictine monks from the Abbey of Montserrat came to the Phipippines in 1895. The Benedictine Abbey in Manila is also dedicated to Our Lady of Montserrat.
    This award is given to the graduating pupils who have continuously studied in
    St. Benedict College from Levels I to 14.


  4. Gawad Pampalakasan (Sports Award)
    These awards are given to graduating pupils who have distinguished themselves in any sports competition officially participated in by SBC.


  5. Gawad Baden Powell or Gawad Josefa Escoda (Baden Powell/Josefa Escoda Award)
    This award is given to the graduating pupil who proved himself/herself a model scout worthy of emulation through his daily living.


  6. Gawad Sining (Performing Arts Award)
    This award is given to the graduating pupil who has shown excellent performance in the performing arts.


  7. Manunulat ng Taon (Journalist of the Year Award - English/Filipino)
    This award is given to the graduating pupil who has shown excellence in the field of campus journalism.

2.      Conduct (20%)

2.1 The general conduct average of the child will form part of the child's final grade in conduct.

2.2 Conduct shall be based on the observed behavior and attitude of the candidate as evidenced by his/her refinement in speech, action and work and daily relationship with his /her classmates, peers, teachers and people he/she gets in touch with daily.

2.3 Observations, written or anecdotal reports given by the teachers handling the child will be essential.

3.      Co-Curricular Activities (10%)

3.1 The following are considered when computing for the co-curricular activities:

o        Academic contests inside and outside the school

o        Performing Arts contests inside and outside the school

o        Organizations/Clubs

3.2 Performance shall be based on the quality and active participation/leadership of the candidate in at least one authorized pupil organization or club. Awards in recognition of what the pupil learned in school for every school year from Levels 9-14 shall also form part of the performance.

3.3 The rating for co-curricular activities is based on the combined assessment of the advisers of the clubs where he/she was a member as recorded in separate evaluation sheets for co-curricular activities and organization recognized by the school.

HONORS COMMITTEE

All honors and awards given to pupils are reviewed and deliberated upon by a committee composed of the teachers directly handling the candidate for honors, the assistant principal, and the principal as chairperson. The decision of the committee is final.
