Romans 5:12, 15b, 17-19, 20b-21; Luke 12:35-38
(Fr Aelred Nilo, OSB)

“Laging handa?” … “Saan?” … “Prepared for what?”

In 1907, an English soldier named Baden-Powell devised the Scout Motto: BE PREPARED. He published it in Scouting for Boys in 1908. Two years later, in 1910, the Boy Scouts of America was founded.

In Scouting for Boys, Baden-Powell wrote that to BE PREPARED means “YOU ARE ALWAYS IN A STATE OF READINESS IN MIND AND BODY TO DO YOUR DUTY.” More than a century later, preparedness is still a cornerstone of Scouting. Through its fun, values-based program, scouting prepares young people for life.

Inspiration Quotes provide us this wisdom: “LIFE IS UNPREDICTABLE AND YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT IS COMING NEXT. DON'T EVER GET TOO COMFORTABLE. ALWAYS BE READY TO CHANGE.”

Today’s gospel parable of the master’s return, JESUS CHALLENGES US TO BE FAITHFUL AND VIGILANT. In that way, we are ready to open the door when the master comes and knocks. But the reverse is to happen. Jesus says that the master is going to dress himself for service and have the servants sit at the table. Normally, when a wealthy person comes home his servants must attend on him or her.

It is at that moment that Luke writes that Jesus teaches about what it means to be a “great one” in the community of his disciples. TO BE THE LEADER MEANS TO BE THE SERVANT. AND JESUS IS THE MODEL: “I AM AMONG YOU AS THE ONE WHO SERVES.”

However, when we do service to others it is we ourselves who benefit most. When we generously serve others, it is they who repay us and shower good gifts on us.

Love Radio said, “ANG TUNAY NA PAGTULONG AY HINDI NAGHAHANAP NG KAPALIT.”

Saint Paul wrote about his inner conflict. “I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. I can will what is right, but I cannot do it. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I do” (Rom 7:15,18b-19). As a result, we give up struggling against sin. We end up condemning ourselves as hopeless and incorrigible.

But Saint Paul also tells us: “WHERE SIN INCREASED, GRACE OVERFLOWED ALL THE MORE, so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through justification for eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 5:20-21).

So, whatever happens anytime, anywhere, we must be prepared because grace abounds. At all times, therefore, WE MUST BE READY TO OPEN THE DOOR OF OUR HEART, AND TO SHARE OUR POSSESSIONS, NO MATTER WHEN JESUS MAY COME TO US.

H. Jackson Brown Jr. said, “THE BEST PREPARATION FOR TOMORROW IS DOING YOUR BEST TODAY.”
